Is it possible to make a home made, high abv brew using beer kits? (malt extract)?

I want to make a high alcohol brew, that has good taste but, somewhere in the 8 to 10% range. Is this possible using a kit? I'm new to brewing and the kit is the way I would like to go for my first few brews. any help or information would be nice. Possibly even a recipe? Thanks!

1. It's not the kit, you need special yeast to survive higher alcohol levels. If you buy/have a kit, it should have mail order or internet sites to order yeast, they'll tell you what ones are high abv. You'll pay a premium for them, though.

2. If you want to use a kit, find one for barleywine. If you can't find a kit, there are lots of recipes on the net. You might want to start with http://byo.com. You might want to re-prime with champagne yeast just before bottling. It can tolerate higher levels of alcohol than beer yeasts can.
